Kim has taken fundraising to new heights—literally! Kim, one of our long-standing colleagues, chose one of the most daring and unique ways to raise money for Crossroads Care Kent. We spoke to her about her remarkable journey that led to this unforgettable experience in the skies.
Please tell us how this all started.
The first time I visited Headcorn Aerodrome nearly 4 years ago I was over 18 stone and walking with a mobility walker.
My eye was taken by a quaint bi-plane and then I realised a man was being harnessed to the top of it! I watched it bumpily taxi to the runway, take off and soar in the air for what seemed like ages! I wanted that to be me! So badly!
I took myself over to the little office there and grabbed a leaflet. There was a weight limit – way, way below what I was at the time.
I think subconsciously, I made a mental promise to myself that one day, I would do a Wing Walk.
What gave you the determination to make this happen?
I’ve always struggled with my weight and it wasn’t until my Dad passed away at the end of last year that something clicked into gear and I finally began to lose some. A year down the line and I have now lost 5 stone, can walk normally, stand, bend and I feel like a new person.
When I hit the weight limit for the Wing Walk I booked a slot and made it official. Sunday 7th September 2025.
Why did you choose to fundraise for Crossroads?
I’ve worked for Crossroads for 10 years, firstly as a CSW then as a Care Manager and I’ve always thought it an amazing charity.
So it seemed a no-brainer to try and raise a few pennies for a worthwhile cause whilst experiencing something so exhilarating.
How was the big day itself?
The day finally arrived yesterday and it still seems so surreal!
It was a beautiful sunny day and so many people came along to support me including family, friends, colleagues and even some staff members! I was in awe!
Between the GoFundMe page and cash donations from staff and clients and their families, I have raised at least £1200 for Crossroads. People have been amazing!
And the experience up in the air?
The experience itself was just incredible. I was excited but nervous but it was so worth it.
500 ft up, reaching speeds of 110 mph, it was honestly a rush that is hard to describe. I felt like I had conquered the world!
I landed to a round of applause and still feel humbled by the energy and enthusiasm of those that came along.
An immensely rewarding and emotional experience – can’t help thinking that my Dad would be so proud of me 🥺 💟
