Living Well Beyond Cancer

Everything you need to know about our free support for people living with and beyond cancer across Medway — who it's for, what's available, how to refer and how to get involved.

What is Living Well Beyond Cancer?

Living Well Beyond Cancer is a free programme of practical and emotional support for people living with and beyond cancer across Medway. Life after a cancer diagnosis — or after treatment ends — can feel overwhelming, and our support helps you rebuild confidence, reduce isolation, and take steps forward at your own pace.

Who can access the service?

The programme is open to adults living with or beyond cancer across the Medway area, particularly those who may have fewer resources or support around them.

Do I have to still be having treatment?

No. The programme supports people living with cancer and people who have finished treatment. Much of our support is designed for the period after treatment ends, which is often when people feel most alone.

Is the service available outside Medway?

This programme covers the Medway area. If you live elsewhere in Kent, please get in touch — we may be able to point you towards other Crossroads Care Kent services or local organisations that can help.

Will I have to pay for this service?

No. All support within the Living Well Beyond Cancer programme is free of charge.

What support is available?

There are three strands of support:

  • Creative Therapy — creative group sessions designed to reduce anxiety and help rebuild confidence, in a supportive, informal space alongside others who understand what you're going through.
  • Return to Work Support — practical and emotional support for those thinking about returning to work following cancer treatment, at a pace that works for you.
  • Peer Support — being matched with a trained volunteer, including people with their own lived experience of cancer, for one-to-one support.

Can I access more than one type of support?

Yes. You're welcome to take part in whichever strands are helpful to you, and we'll talk through the options with you when you first get in touch.

What happens in a Creative Therapy session?

Sessions are informal, group-based and led by a facilitator. No previous creative experience is needed — the focus is on expression, confidence and connection rather than on producing finished artwork.

Will my peer support volunteer have had cancer themselves?

Some of our volunteers have their own lived experience of cancer. We take your preferences into account when matching you, though we can't guarantee a particular match.

Is the Return to Work Support only for people going back to the same job?

No. The support covers thinking through your options — returning to a previous role, changing roles, reduced hours, or simply working out whether you're ready. We'll help you prepare at your own pace.

How do I get support?

You can refer yourself, or be referred by a health or social care professional. Call our Volunteer Line on 03450 956 701 (Option 3) or email volunteer@crossroadskent.org.

Can a health or social care professional refer someone to the programme?

Yes. Professionals are welcome to refer using the same Volunteer Line and email address, with the person's consent.

Is the service confidential?

Yes. What you share with us stays between you and the team supporting you, unless there are safeguarding concerns we need to act on.

Can I volunteer with the programme?

Yes — we're always glad to hear from people who'd like to give their time, including those with their own experience of cancer. Contact the Volunteer Line on 03450 956 701 (Option 3) or email volunteer@crossroadskent.org. You can also read more on our Volunteer Service page.

Who funds this programme?

This programme is funded by NHS Kent and Medway Cancer Alliance.
