Answers to common questions about our free respite care service for unpaid carers across Kent — eligibility, what's included, staff, and funding.

Can I access the free service if I have over the savings threshold?

Yes. We do not currently means test any of our families, so the service is available to all unpaid carers regardless of savings or financial situation.

Who can access this service?

This service is available to unpaid carers and their dependents aged 18 and above. Referrals can be made by the carer, family members, friends, GPs, or any health or social care professional.

How does the Short Breaks service work?

One of our experienced care managers will visit you at home to carry out an assessment. Together, we'll agree a support plan that works for you and the person you care for. You'll then be matched with a trained support worker who will visit regularly, giving you up to 3 hours each week to take a break.

How long does the service last?

The Short Breaks service is provided free of charge for an initial period of up to six months. Your support is regularly reviewed by our care managers to ensure it continues to meet your needs.

Do your staff receive training?

Yes. All of our staff are paid and trained carers.

Are your staff vetted?

Yes. All staff are subject to an annual enhanced DBS check.

Can I pay for extra visits?

This may be possible for a special occasion, however we do not currently offer an additional paid service due to our current contract requirements with KCC.

Can your staff help out around the home?

Yes. They can support with light domestic duties around the home, pending an assessment.

Can your staff help with personal care for my loved one?

Yes. All staff are trained and have the relevant PPE to assist an individual with their personal care needs.
